Marketing My Expertise the Ugly Side...

My marketing mentor tells me that I've been too focused on showing how cool the stuff I know is vs. focusing on helping people get more of what they want most...

I think she has a point...

I heard Eben Pagan say something like (and I'm going off memory here, so I might be butchering his thoughts) that one of the biggest mistakes experts make is to attempt to sell their expertise.  So they'll pretty much brag about all they know, but they end up alienating the people who they want to serve most.  Marketers on the other hand tap into what people really, really want and speak to them based on their dreams.  In essense, maketers sell people their own dreams - sometimes ethically and many times not.

I'm someone who prides himself in maintaining what my friend Jeff calls a "Rookie Mindset".  I'm in a constant journey towards learning the most useful tools to help people create change.  This is useful, but it's also a double edged sword, because at least for me, it sometimes creates a disconnect between the people I want to help most and myself.  I sometimes get confused and think that the people I want to help most are as interested in neuroscience as much as I am.

At some level, I think displaying my expertise is a rebelion towards the "establishment".  There's a bunch of gurus, false promises, and people selling empty dreams.  I HATE that AND I hate that form of marketing.   It's insincere and I think it doesn't come from the best place.

I think the middle ground comes with the realization that I'm here to help you, and since I value helping you as much as I do, I've got to learn how to communicate better with you.

Ther reality is this:

I want to help you create the changes that you most want in your life.  I want to help you create changes that you might have given up on.  I want to put the cards on the table and tell you that even though there is a good chance I can help you, I can't guarantee it.  I also want you to know that I'm committed to helping you create more of what you want in your life, AND that I'm also committed to working with people who are commited towards helping themselves.  I want you to know that I enjoy listening to your goals and enjoy creating those goosebump moments where change happens.

Now to figure out how to communicate this better...
